Junior Accountant (Independent Contractor)
Location: Remote
Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Compensation: Tax preparation is compensated at 50% commission per completed return. All other work is compensated at $30/hr.
Hours: 5-7 hours per week outside of tax season (May-December), and 25-50 hours during tax season (January-April).

Position Summary
We’re looking for a Junior Accountant who is eager to learn, enjoys working directly with clients, and is passionate about helping people feel more confident about their finances. The Junior Accountant will support RT Accounting Services with bookkeeping, tax preparation, and client consultations. This role is ideal for someone who has a solid accounting foundation and is looking to expand their experience in tax and advisory services while working in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities
Tax Preparation
- Prepare individual and business tax returns accurately and efficiently.
- Review client documents for completeness.
- Communicate with clients to obtain missing information.
- Identify applicable deductions and credits.
- Ensure returns comply with federal and state tax laws.
- Maintain confidentiality of all client information.
Bookkeeping
- Record and categorize financial transactions.
- Reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
- Maintain accurate financial records.
- Assist with monthly bookkeeping and clean-up projects.
- Prepare basic financial reports for clients.
Client Support & Consultations
- Meet virtually with clients to discuss bookkeeping and tax matters.
- Answer client questions professionally and compassionately.
- Educate clients on financial best practices and tax responsibilities.
- Document client interactions and follow-up items.
Administrative & Team Responsibilities
- Attend team meetings and training sessions.
- Stay current on tax law updates and accounting best practices.
- Collaborate with other team members to ensure excellent client service.
Qualifications
- Degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience with bookkeeping and account reconciliations.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.
- Comfortable learning new software and tax technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Drake Tax Software and/or QuickBooks Online.
- Experience preparing individual tax returns.
- PTIN (or willingness to obtain one).
- Experience working with small businesses or self-employed individuals.
- Personal or professional experience working with neurodivergent individuals and the LGBTQ+ community.
Compensation
- 50% commission on every completed tax return.

1099 Contractor Position
This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Contractors are responsible for providing their own equipment and maintaining an appropriate workspace.
Hours will vary throughout the year based on business needs. Outside of tax season (May–December), contractors can expect approximately 5–7 hours per week. During tax season (January–April), hours typically range from 25–50 hours per week.
We understand the importance of flexibility and are happy to work with your availability and preferred maximum number of hours whenever possible.
